When is a comeback not a comeback? 9-13, purportedly the third album from newly resurrected sludge gods Iron Monkey, might be a case in point. That their late, great frontman Johnny Morrow is missed we can take for granted, but this new incarnation of Iron Monkey – a slimmed down power-trio featuring two original members – is a strange beast indeed.

While the use of the band name might have helped this outfit grab a deal with extreme metal overlords Relapse Records, it does no favours to this album: a very fun fusion of hardcore and doom with some great moments (the wonderfully absurd Doomsday Impulse Multiplier and OmegaMangler are major standouts) weighed down by the impossible expectations raised by the name Iron Monkey.
