Ibibio Sound Machine, the planet’s premier Afro-disco-funk collective, are back with their latest offering Doko Mien, and with it they have officially marked the end of winter. Since this album arrived in my inbox I have seen not one drop of rain – that is definitely no coincidence.

Their now trademark Afro-tronica has gathered a few more subtle touchstones on this record. Its softer moments are increasingly jazzy – I Know That You’re Thinking About Me particularly could have been lifted straight from a Khruangbin record. Gladly though there’s still sacks full of wiggin’ out guitar solos, funky horn phrases and an insatiable, omnipresent groove that Messrs Onyeabor and Bebey would be proud of. Expect to hear these songs drifting across festival sites all summer long.
