Ohio’s Heartless Bastards make rock ‘n’ roll music the old-school way. Despite refusing to make the same record twice, there are trademark aspects to their sound; big riffs, rolling drums, country influences. Chief Restless One is Erika Wennerstrom, the only constant member and she of the uniquely soulful vocal that drives the band. Wind-Up Bird sets the tone with its crescendo of guitar and drum, whilst highlight Journey sounds more Byrds than, well, Journey. Hi-Line should be their cross-over track and will go down a storm on Radio 2.  A little MOR then, but when “it’s suddenly clear, the journey’s the destination”, who cares what side of the road you’re on.
