On 2018’s Lavender, Nandi Rose, better known as Half Waif, dwelled on concepts of death and grief. Her new album The Caretaker continues in a similarly reflective vein, musing on the passage of time and the changing of relationships, examining what it means to take care of both yourself and others.

Here though, she leans further into power pop, thrusting her combination of intricate synths and astute lyrics forward with her most soaring hooks to date (even its more introverted second half has gems like the sweeping Halogen 2). On My Best Self she sings “be the one you want to be” – with The Caretaker, it’s hard not to think that Rose is putting out a singular statement.
