Gwenno’s third album is a meditation on motherhood, and a much more introspective affair than Saunders’ previous records. The musical reference points remain similar – think Broadcast, 1970s psych, pastoral folk – but the tone and mood of the record is considerably more intimate than previous releases.
It’s Gwenno’s second release to be sung entirely in Cornish, so one can be excused for not having the worlds as a diving off point for reference, but given the conviction and beauty in melody, this is of little consideration. The title track is a gorgeously laconic shuffle vibrating with harmony, Kan Me leans into more traditional folk instrumentation, and Men An Toll recalls the intimacy. An album inviting you to bathe and wonder at its small detail.
