Lee Fisher enjoys a filthy and fierce garage punk release from Grey Hairs
Gringo
Released: 13.01.17
2015’s Colossal Downer was a band fighting off impending middle age by becoming the late 80s Seattle band they all wanted to hear. Grey Hairs’ Serious Business builds on all the best bits of that album but adds stronger songs and some real anger and tension.
This is filthy, surfy, fierce garage punk like your dad bangs on about when he’s had a few. The Chin (Pt 2) sees bassist Amy giving it her best Courtney, Backwards is taut and creepy, 2.36am nicks the bass line from Babylon’s Burning and turns it into a total beast (shades of early Whigs).
The bangers keep coming, the beer keeps flowing and I wish I wasn’t too fucking old to stage dive any more. Essential.
