Although it’s been seven long years since the Gorillaz’s polarising last LP, on their latest outing, 2-D and the gang waste no time reminding us why they’re the baddest virtual band in the land. Humanz – a masterclass in promiscuous eclecticism – brims with undeniable creative ingenuity, and is brought to vivid fruition by Damon Albarn’s signature brand of nuanced sonic alchemy.

Brace yourself for a madcap rollercoaster ride through an eerily ethereal and chaotically surreal wonderland that sits precariously atop a gallimaufric pile of melodic building blocks. Captivating and effortlessly idiosyncratic, this record – populated by a cast of collaborators that includes Grace Jones, Kelela and Popcaan – signals the triumphant rejuvenation of Albarn’s enduring vanity project. But don’t call it a comeback.
