Gold Class are in danger of sounding a bit like a dodgy Smiths tribute band thanks to frontman Adam Curley’s Morrissey-like yelps. Thankfully, the Melbourne quartet’s debut, It’s You, offers up something a little less jangly alongside its lyric slingers’ familial vocal.

Furlong opens with urgent drums, Curley crooning “Bad from the neck down” in a frosty melancholy. Athena is built around a taught, repeating riff that recedes to feedback and slack, descending bass. The guitars here are razor sharp – crossing swords in a tug of war between the music’s darker aesthetic and Curley’s off-kilter delivery. It’s Iceage with less aggro; it could even be The Moz at his most miserable and it’s most definitely grey-scale post-punk done well.
