Ben Lowes-Smith discovers a masterful control of brevity on Frankie Cosmos’ new release

Frankie Cosmos’ fourth full-length is an exercise in the masterful control of brevity she has. The minutiae of the everyday takes the centre stage in Frankie’s writing. The instrumentation is terrific too; Deerhoof-y flourishes are peppered all over these beautiful, evocative songs, and at 21 songs it’s certainly substantial but never feels bloated.
Bee Thousand is an obvious reference point in the family tree of Close It Quietly, but where Robert Pollard is intentionally obscurantist, Cosmos is painfully confessional, eschewing metaphor while finding comfort, beauty and pain in the staggeringly ordinary. A triumph in miniature.
