Over the last few years, the mighty Earth have expanded their core sound to include additional musicians and even vocalists, with varying but mostly positive results. But this new album is a return to the style that made their name on albums like Hex and The Bees Made Honey… All you get here is Mariana Trench-deep riffs from Dylan Carlson and Adrienne Davis’ slow, precise, surprisingly intricate drums, but rather than being a retrograde step, it’s the best Earth record in a decade.

You don’t really pinpoint specific tracks on an Earth album – they’re to be consumed whole – but all ten included here offer glorious variations on the theme, stripped down and minimal and yet utterly absorbing, music to lose yourself in.
