These are rough times. There’s not an awful lot we can do about that, I guess, but the veil of darkness hanging over the world makes the shards of light afforded us all the more precious. And there are few lamps with the power to illuminate the gloom more warmly than the music of Beth Jeans Houghton.
Her second album under the Du Blonde guise is a brilliant addition to her canon, which sees her screwing with the boundaries of rock music to make something which is at times abrasive, beautiful and surprising. Her unmistakable voice seems to be growing in power and confidence as the years pass, and a decade into her recording career her songs have never sounded better.
