On his third album as Doldrums, Airick Asher Woodhead continues to blend different strains of electronic and dance music – thudding industrial, precise techno and unsettling drone are all present here – in pursuit of strange, alluring avant-pop.
Following on from where its predecessor The Air Conditioned Nightmare left off, Esc travels from the intense ambience of opener Epilogue to the grand (but no less strange) terrain of Heater and the brilliant Machine Boi, a song that truly is the number one chart smash of the year in a better, kinder reality than our own. In honing the balance between chaotic machine trickery and the kind human heart beating within, Woodhead’s work as Doldrums is continuing to grow with each release.
