Andrew Thompson reviews the new release from Deerhunter
4AD
Released: 18.01.19
From the opening harpsichord chime of latest offering Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, this album is unmistakeably Deerhunter.
Despite all its jollity, the album is, at its core, a deeply sinister record. Brilliantly described as ‘a science fiction album about the present’, Deerhunter’s now trademark Baroque-infused alt. pop, progressed effortlessly by Cate Le Bon’s magnificent production, is on its surface loping and whimsical but on closer inspection its subject matter ranges from violent revolution to the murder of MP Jo Cox (No One’s Sleeping).
This is the sort of album that matures at a great pace with inert intricacy in content and deliverance. It’s a predictably great album that might push its way into the album of the year lists.
