Ali Welford discovers a fruitful and playful release from Dana Gavanski

Canadian-Serbian artist Dana Gavanski’s second album is all about finding her niche. A fruitful and at times confounding progression from 2020’s Yesterday is Gone, its nine tracks transcend early comparisons to Cate Le Bon and Julia Jacklin, espousing a more playful, expressive sound created in her own image. Sonic surprises abound, from the twinkling, almost childlike keyboards of I Kiss the Night to her embrace of Moog on the looping arpeggio single Indigo Highway, all stylishly cultivated by Gavanski’s trademark poise and understated vocal.
These adventurous impulses take precedence from the immediacy which so effectively underpinned her debut, yet the rewards of When It Comes’ illuminating art-pop stretch beyond mere intrigue. Certainly, its aversion to comfort zone cruising can only bode well for Gavanski’s long-term prospects.
