Dan Mangan isn’t particularly well known in the UK, which is a shame – his smart, literate indie folk deserves a wider audience. Club Meds might be the album to do it, being more ambitious and slick than previous releases, but something has been lost along the way. There’s a lot on this album which impresses, but not much that engages in the way a song like Robots did. The production and arrangements are big and shiny and tricksy and it’ll probably sound great on daytime 6Music but aside from a couple of great tracks (the up-tempo, Calexico-esque Mouthpiece in particular), it too often sounds laboured rather than inspired. There’s no doubting Mangan has talent to spare, but sometimes less is more.
