The Hold Steady’s charismatic hipster dad takes another partially successful stride away from his alma mater’s guitar-sodden, bar-room stompers by placing an emphasis on electronic beats, keyboard-heavy production and an occasional brass section.

Although a noble attempt to put distance between himself and the band, the magic only really happens when he revs up the beats per minute and goes for it with thrashy vigour or when his tales are given enough room to breathe.

God In Chicago is a case in point, where a simple piano refrain backs Finn’s poignant storytelling. As he narrates the minutiae surrounding a funeral, he’s at his emotional best as he crashes the symbolism of religion head-on into his musings on human relationships.
