Although Courtney Barnett’s latest album feels like a drastic departure from her previous work which is infamously strong in its witty lyricism and captivating hooks, this instrumental album still shows off the flashes of brilliance we’re used to from the Aussie songwriter.

The instrumental tracks find their strength in tone and texture, more concerned with the fabric of the music itself. The album was made with Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa for the 2021 documentary Anonymous Club, directed by Danny Cohen about Courtney Barnett and her experience in the music industry. The album’s power is rooted in its ability to convey emotion through instrumental only, proving that Barnett need not spell everything out explicitly in order for listeners to understand her.
