Robert Nichols reviews the debut album release from Newcastle’s Cameron Scott
Self-Release
Released: 02.08.19
Bursting forth with his strident lead single opener Wow!, Cameron Scott confidently splinters the indie home comforts of Newcastle band Save The Bees to proclaim a solo venture of atmospheric adventure.
Retaining the pop song format Cameron builds synths and guitar texture around his words to lend a cinematic soundtrack quality. A series of short films carry a running melancholic narrative of the Big Sulk, and, as he cites Radiohead, Blue Nile and Vangelis in his notes, I think of Teesside’s recently shape-shifted Broken Broadcast. Cameron can pick up the tempo, if not the mood, float away on a reverie, beneath shimmering starlight or slow dance to the flickering flames of burning bridges. An album of exquisite exploration.
