Paul Broadhead revels in a vibrant album from Black Honey
Fox Five
Released: 21.09.18
Black Honey’s promise is realised on a vibrant album, from the-in-your-face opener I Only Hurt The Ones I Love, to the moody closer Wasting Time. Tracks like Midnight are more reminiscent of the dirty pop of Girls Aloud as they are of any indie band you’d care to name, but make no mistake, this is a rock ‘n’ roll album.
The title track is all monstrously dirty guitar riffs and Hello Today goes a bit 90’s grunge, Izzy B Phillips’ schizophrenic Harley Quinn meets Shirley Manson vocal suddenly fronting the Breeders. On Bad Friends she’s Lorde, discussing the politics of Saturday night. The honey may be black, but the music is Day-Glo bright and it’s an altogether excellent debut.
