Sometimes an album is so entirely out on its own, it robs a reviewer of the opportunity to get by with a handful of lazy comparisons. That’s absolutely true of Magnetic Chapters, the latest from sonic wizard Ralph Cumbers. If pressed, I guess there’s some Plone and some Aphex Twin and some seventies minimalism and a background making bangers, but it’s all much wonkier and unpredictable than that suggests.

Guardian Angles Of Cloud Ninety-Nine sounds like a rave track that’s broken down in salty tears. Scintillator would be a dancefloor smash if the dancefloor was tilting wildly and the speakers were malfunctioning. Intergalactic Biodomes is tribal absurdism. Ultimately Magnetic Chapters is playful and unexpected, occasionally melancholy but always utterly original.
