Big Scary Monsters

Released: 3.11.14

Axes hail from London via Essex, Scotland, Iran and Denmark and create playful instrumental tunes for the post-indie generation featuring glitchy, melodic math; it would be a fair guess to say that Axes songwriting methods consist of putting a variety of retro game soundtracks into a blender and seeing what sticks. Instrumental music can be pretty dismal in the wrong hands but Axes manage to keep what could easily be a monotonous sound fresh and bright, with tracks like Real Talk incorporating almost hip-hop/reggae infused melodies and rhythms, before stomping out some brutally fast-paced fretwork. Glory tones down when the penultimate Your Two leads a slower build up to snappy, raucous album closer My Three, rounding it all off nicely.
