Focus: Charlie Floyd

Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Charlie Floyd and I’m from North Shields, Newcastle.

What is it you do?
I am an artist, songwriter and producer.

How long have you been doing it?
I’ve been writing music for just shy of a decade now, and producing for almost the same amount of time. I began writing music at 15 and formed local Newcastle band, BALTIC. Not long after that I attended college for a music production degree and self taught myself to produce music. Recently I made the transition to become a solo artist and began producing all of my own work as well as the writing.

What inspires you?
Music in general inspires me. It didn’t take long into my life to connect with music as something deeper than just a hobby. I grew up with music being played a lot and used to bike around to local music shops to buy CD’s. I always loved obsessing over albums. The artwork, the writing, the production were all as important as each other whenever I found a new album or artist / band that I loved. It’s been the one thing that’s stayed constantly important throughout my life, what inspires me nowadays is the excitement of modern production. I’m always listening and analysing music that makes me feel such strong emotions to try and understand what musical choices can inflict such feelings. I try to carry that into my own production and writing so that they pair together giving full disclosure to a story.

Tell us about your music.
From writing music in a band to what I write now as Charlie Floyd, there’s definitely been a contrast in the honesty in the writing and with my own personal style & sound. The process of writing and producing my work now is deeply important to me, and I treat it as a craft. I’ve found trust in my decision making when it comes to my music, recording techniques, mixing choices, instrumental choices, which if nothing else, I hope offers a fresh and unique experience for a listener. A lot of the inspiration from growing up around 2000’s indie and pop music can be heard in the songs I write. I always strive to make every song as addictive as the ones I found myself playing over and over throughout my youth, and so with that comes a feeling of familiarity whilst offering my own sound.

What have you got coming up in the future?
Off the back of my debut single, I have a follow up release Take It Or Leave It releasing on April 11th, a day ahead of my debut hometown headline Gig at Think Tank? On Saturday April 12th. In terms of 2025 in the festival world I have a support slot for Robbie Williams at Newcastle’s ‘Come Together’ festival in June, The Wombats opening slot at Sheffields ‘Rock N Roll Circus’, and a slot at this year’s Hardwick Festival. All accompanied by a string of single releases and an EP in summer.
