Gateshead alt rockers Duchess release new single Haunter on Friday 6th July. We bring you an exclusive listen here, and the trio were kind enough to tell us a little bit more about the track…

After the release of our debut single Rachael we got a lot of positive feedback and it felt great to break that silence of newly released music we had before it. Following up on that was a little bit daunting because we had a few tracks to choose from all of which would have took us in a different direction, so we snuck it in our live setlist at a few shows and it really stood out to people and that helped us make the decision to go down that route.

Haunter took a few different forms over the course of its writing and could have ended up sounding very different. The track was originally quite a chirpy tune, probably too chirpy given the subject and title. We hit a fork in the road with which way to carry the song until we re-wrote the chorus and it sounded huge, then it all clicked together thereafter.

Lyrically it’s about finding some measure of comfort in knowing things can’t possibly get any worse for you when you’ve hit rock-bottom.
