The immensely talented Alice Lowe has starred in some real cult favourite films in her career to this point, and with her own debut feature film on the way, it’s expected that the black comedy will be another hit for the actress. A special preview screening at Tyneside Cinema would be enough to pull many fans along, but with a Q&A with the actress and now director to follow, Wednesday 1st February is a date to mark in your diary.
Prevenge sees Lowe in the role of writer, director and star of the movie filmed during her own real-life pregnancy. Struggling with her conscience, loneliness, and a strange strain of prepartum madness, we follow Ruth as she chooses between redemption and destruction at the moment of motherhood. A pregnant woman on a killing spree is an original jumping off point, and it’s her misanthropic unborn baby dictating her actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. The child speaks to Ruth from the womb, luring her to nefarious deeds, and it is set be as darkly funny a tale as you’ll see this year; though that’s what you’d probably expect from the star and co-writer of Sightseers. The chance to see this wry and twisted British comedy early makes this a real stand-out screening too, as Prevenge is almost certain to become one of 2017’s cult smashes.
