Reliably informed

Remember a time when disco, soul and funk ruled the dancefloor? Unfortunately, if you were born from the eighties onwards, you probably never really got a chance to throw some shapes to these classic tunes. But that’s where SoulJam comes in. The club night – which spreads itself across Newcastle, Manchester and Sheffield – brings the best funk, soul and disco to the dancefloor, providing the chance for everyone to go all Saturday Night Fever on their mates. Located in Newcastle’s World Headquarters, the night has been running since 2012. We asked one of the brains behind the night, Jake Van Der Velde, more about Tyneside’s premier boogie night.

What is the music policy?

Soul, Funk and Disco and anything with a groove.

Where does it happen?

Our parties go down at World Hq in Newcastle, Mint Lounge in Manchester and The Harley in Sheffield.

Is there a manifesto or idea behind the club night?

“SoulJam brings the best in boogie. No cheese and no bullshit just great tunes and great times!”

Who runs it?

Jake Van der Velde and Jack Pearce.

How long has it been running?

We launched in Newcastle in September 2012.

Is there an average age range?

Probably about 21 but ranges from 18-25 and older.

Could you describe your average clubber?

People who love dancing to great tunes!

Can you name three songs most likely to fill the dancefloor?

Prince’s I Wanna Be Your Lover (the Dimitri From Paris edit), Sly and the Family Stone’s If You Want Me To Stay and James Brown’s Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag.

And three current favourites?

That Friday Pay by Sonny Jenkins and the New York Pot Pourri Strings, Free Life’s There’s Something Better and Sylvester’s Do You Wanna Funk.

What’s your favourite moment in the club’s history?

Probably playing the Mother Owl stage at Gottwood festival last summer. Bringing funk and disco to everyone in the sunshine, couldn’t have picked a more perfect setting and we can’t wait to return this year!

When’s the next one?

Wednesday 18th February at World Headquarters.

In one sentence, tell us why we should come.

If you want the best in Soul, Funk and Disco there ain’t a better place for ya!

The next SoulJam takes place at World Headquarters, Newcastle, on Wednesday 18th February.
