Now this looks very special indeed. On Sunday 25th June, The Cluny plays host to a visit to Newcastle from veteran Italian experimental outfit Zu, with support from Canadian neo-classical violinist and composer Jessica Moss, for what should a truly enthralling night. Zu have been ploughing a singular but constantly transforming musical furrow for twenty years, and their recent House Of Mythology album Zhator is one of their most fascinating yet – two lengthy and powerful tracks that delve into all manner of esoteric traditions (Sufis and sky burials and Tibetan lore) in a manner that recalls artists like Coil and Current 93, with the more ritualistic of Coil’s releases perhaps being the closest musical parallel too.

Jessica Moss has just released her debut solo album Pools Of Light on Montreal label Constellation, also home to a number of other groups she’s been involved with her in two decade career, most notably Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band but also Black Ox Orkestar and Carla Bozulich’s phenomenal Evangelista album. The album has one foot in a form of neo-classical minimalism, the other in various Arab and Eastern European flavours, and sees her treated and looped violin working around vocal loops and samples to genuinely mesmerising effect. With local noise rockers Okay Champ rounding out the bill, it’s a diverse evening not to be missed.

Zu play The Cluny, Newcastle on Sunday 25th June.
