Reliably informed

Formed in the early eighties, zoviet*france have remained one of Tyneside’s most important and influential members of the ambient and industrial scene over the years, despite remaining largely anonymous and shifting around founding member Ben Ponton. As purveyors of noise and experimental sound, there’s no-one quite like them in the region and it’s still fascinating to watch them live, even thirty years down the road.

For their performance at the BALTIC, though, the group are abandoning their usual approach to gigs to create a unique one-hour show. It will consist of sounds made entirely from playing damaged and manipulated vinyl records, whether they’re physically warped and distorted, fractured, smashed or abraded, in order to create a variety of weird and wonderful sounds. The performance is also being cut live onto 78 discs by Lathe Revival. As part of BALTIC 39’s exhibition The Curves of the Needle, it promises to be a spectacular and intriguing celebration of sound and vinyl records.

zoviet*france play at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead on Monday 4th May. You can claim a £2.50 discount on Eventbrite using the code NARC15!
