On 19th August 1978 in Abafan, a city in southern Iran, 422 people died when the Cinema Rex was set alight from within, triggering the Iranian revolution. The ruling government of Iran correctly reported that Islamic militants set the fire, while the anti-Shah protesters blamed the intelligence service of the nation, SAVAK.

In Cinema, a one woman show performed and written by Zendeh Artistic Director Nazli Tabatabai-Khatambakhsh and coming to Northern Stage from Tuesday 13th to Thursday 15th October, pays homage to the dead and tells the stories of the lives of those who perished, from the viewpoint of a feral cat who survived the attack. The play offers a full multimedia experience, with stunning video projections by Matt Jamie and a powerful score by Mariam Rezaei, alongside a poetic, heartbreaking story told beautifully by Tabatabai-Khatambakhsh. Expect enthralling storytelling, poignant historical content and moving tales of those who lost their lives.
