The Central Bar’s Lectures In The Pub have been a blistering success, with sell-outs happening regularly, the clambering for tickets is usually immense. The lectures return with a Christmas twist on Tuesday 15th December and Wednesday 16th December.

The theme isn’t one of Saint Nicholas here, bringing gifts to all the boys and girls who’ve been very good, but of Krampus, a frightening beast-like creature from ancient European folklore. Krampus emerged in tales in the Alpine region, who during the Yule season, finds the children who’ve been most naughty and comes up with frighteningly horrible ways to punish them.

Those in attendance will hear fascinating tales of rituals in keeping with pre-Germanic Pagan traditions, which saw men dressed as demons frightening children on Krampusnacht, chasing them and hitting them with sticks, running through the streets, in a centuries old activity.

David Silk leads the lecture covering the darker side of the festive season, telling us of reasons ‘tis not the season to be so jolly. A chance to be engaged with fascinating subject matter and a mulled wine, is a date that needs to be marked on every advent calendar.

David Silk’s lecture Yuletide Fear: Krampus And Other Christmas Horrors comes to The Central Bar, Gateshead on Tuesday 15th December and Wednesday 16th December.
