With a multitude of local gigs under their belt, experienced alt-rockers Wooden Cousin have been gathering recognition from all over the North East, and are set to dominate the stage at Sunderland’s Pop Recs later this month.

The energetic Middlesbrough quartet are an absolute must for fans of Pavement, as their powerful guitar riffs and strong percussion bask in a rough, yet polished, 90s-style alternative sound. Also influenced by new wave giants XTC and Wire, there’s a distinctive tone of depth and accomplishment to their music; many of the songs have the oddly satisfying tendency to rapidly shift tempo, as can be heard in one of the band’s most recent tracks, Barcode Blues.

If you’re lucky, you may even witness these guys abandoning the idea of vocals altogether (mid-gig), to launch into a turbulent instrumental. It’s surprises such as these that render Wooden Cousin an exciting group that are sure to keep us all guessing.

Wooden Cousin play at Sunderland’s Pop Recs Ltd, Sunderland on Saturday 21st March.
