Not content with fast becoming known as Teesside’s musical hub (and don’t forget that ‘widest street in the country’ accolade!), Stockton’s recently become home to a handful of pretty impressive folk-orientated gigs. ARC’s recent Infinite Folk festival has obviously whetted the whistle of Broken Broadcast singer James P Riggall, whose new Wood & Wire promotions outfit will be taking over The Storytellers’ stage on a regular basis, presenting some of the region’s best folk and traditional songwriters.
The first event, taking place on Friday 7th October, features JP himself alongside his band The Belafonte. JP’s powerful vocal is the real star of his musical oeuvre, full of a ghostly fragility that shines through his confident tones. With songs that are full of subtleties and wonder amidst atmosphere-laden backdrops, his performance is guaranteed to be a highlight. Also joining JP will be bluesy folk troubadour Timothy Oxnard; the lead singer of The Approved and The Magick Godmothers’ usual balls-to-the-wall style is tempered somewhat, producing an authentic sound and with only bare bones demos currently available, the live setting is definitely the place to get your fix. Completing the line-up, the sublime James Gray Robson & The Lovely Burn provide alternative Americana sounds to ease you gently into the night.
