Taking place as part of Jazz North East’s ongoing Women Make Music events – which have seen performances from Mobo award-winner Zoe Rahman and workshops with influential musicians from far and wide – two superb female-fronted jazz acts are gracing Newcastle this month.

A treasure of the American free jazz scene in the 60s, improvising vocalist Linda Sharrock brings her group to The Black Swan Venue on Thursday 7th May. A creative powerhouse, Linda’s soaring vocals has led to her being cited as an iconic performer. After suffering from a stroke in 2009, which left her wheelchair bound, she teamed up with Berlin-born saxophonist Mario Rechtern and if her recent album, No Is No, is anything to go by, her creativity remains as bright and on-point as ever.

Later in the month, at Jazz Café on Thursday 21st May, a double bill featuring exciting trombone player Sarah Gail Brand and Newcastle-based saxophonist Faye MacCalman presents top notch free jazz improvisations and what are certain to be thrilling performances.

With other gigs in the pipeline featuring talented local Lindsay Hannon Plus (Saturday 27th June), Jazz North East continue to prove that female-fronted jazz is alive and well in the North East.

Linda Sharrock Group play The Black Swan, Newcastle on Thursday 7th and Sarah Gail Brand and Faye MacCalman play Jazz Café, Newcastle on Thursday 21st May.
