Side Gallery and Cinema take a look at women’s progress beyond political enfranchisement this month, as August sees the latest Made in the North Season showcasing work by female filmmakers; weekly screenings of films produced by women, followed by panel discussions, will commemorate their contributions to our regional film landscape.

The first event on Thursday 2nd is an evening of short films which explores women filmmakers’ work in the North East, featuring films by Tina Gharavi, Ngozi Onwurah, Kate Sweeney, Lindsay Duncanson and Dawn Felicia Knox; Penny Woolcock’s fly-on-the-wall documentary about life on a Leeds council estate, Tina Goes Shopping, is screened on Thursday 9th; with Clio Banard’s documentary about playwright Andrea Dunbar The Arbour shown on Thursday 16th. Dream On, a film developed and written by an all-women team which blends magic, fantasy, and realism to tell their story is up next on Thursday 23rd; and the season culminates with Still Here, a trilogy of films in which Finnish photographer and Amber member Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen reconnects with the subjects in her most iconic shoots.

This series of films provides an incredible opportunity to highlight the women talent in the regional film industry, and open up dialogue between the filmmakers and their audience.
