Jo Strømgren’s Winter, Again is poised to deliver the full bleakness you’d expect when you hear the words “Nordic fairytale,” with a set and its dancers swathed in tones of grey, one performer with bloody eyeballs and bird carcasses strewn across the stage. There’s nothing like a bit of taxidermy to set an eerie tone. Scottish Dance Theatre’s latest production centres on a small community which begins to unravel as the thick winter snow begins to thaw, revealing their hidden secrets and misdemeanours.

Strømgren’s choreography is paired with the haunting beauty of Schubert’s Eine Winterreise, which carries enough sinister undertones to make your arm hairs prickle. It won’t be all doom and gloom though, as Strømgren has chosen to intertwine the gloom with some comedic moments.

Bringing more light and vibrancy will be the second in the set of two dances, Slovakian Anton Lachky’s Dreamers. Known for his quirky and humorous style, Lachky relishes the exploration of the links between reality and surrealism in his latest piece of dance theatre, using pops of bold, bright colours and the physicality of his performers to create an act about people who dare to dream whilst not being asleep. Encouraging the leaps across the stage will be a score compiled of music by the likes of Bach, Chopin, Haydn, Vivaldi and Vanhal.

Winter, Again and Dreamers comes to Dance City, Newcastle on Friday 24th April.
