The monthly Holmeside Blues and Roots night at Sunderland’s Independent has grown massively in popularity over recent times, as it’s brought along a host of bands from near and far to play at the venue. As part of their newly-extended European tour, Willie and the Bandits are the latest group to roll up to the night, bringing their blended mix of blues with them.

The group infuse their roots rock with elements from a huge wave of other genres; everything from world music to heavy metal is present in their genre-bending sound, thanks to their use of unusual instruments such as tongue drums, djembes and lap steel guitars. Frontman Willie’s versatile guitar playing has captivated audiences, while the diversity of percussionist Andrew Naumann and bassist Matthew Brook’s talents have earned them a reputation for taking roots to the next level.

Ben Wall of the Independent said: “We’re huge fans of Willie and The Bandits. We massively respect their approach to song writing and natural ability to fuse various musical styles in order to be able to offer something really special.”

Willie and the Bandits play at Independent, Sunderland, on Friday 20th March.
