When What the Body Does Not Remember debuted in 1987 it stunned the world of dance at the time. Now 28 years later Wim Vandekeybus’ critically acclaimed show returns with a new cast and is embarking on a world tour. What the Body Does Not Remember comes to Northern Stage, on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th March.

In what has become a kind of legend, this powerful dance show pushes performers to their physical extremes. It balances on the edge between attraction and repulsion and the result is on-stage confrontation between two dancers, then between two groups and even between dancers and the music.

The accompanying score by Thierry de Mey and Peter Vermeersch is played live on stage by the brilliant Ictus Ensemble. The inclusion of live musicians helps enhance the work’s beautiful structure and further emphasises the importance of the relationship between the music and choreography. This is dance history on stage that is still very much relevant, even today.
