Middlesbrough’s Little Theatre is an oft-overlooked gem. Recently refurbished to the tune of £700,000 the post-war 500 capacity venue’s listings are now expanded to include live music in the Studio Theatre of the adjacent Toft House. What better way to celebrate than the re-emergence of another Teesside institution in Werbeniuk, who play the venue on Friday 16th March. The ‘Teesside world music’ band combine percussion, electronics and catchy vocals with a political conscience and a strong sense of fun. The band currently features Michael Baines, Gary Doyle, Darren Reay and Andy Mellora as well as Tim Oxnard from The Approved and Magick Godmothers. Formed in March 2010 Werbeniuk released their second record, One Of Us Did, in 2016, which is in their own words an “even grumpier” affair than 2011’s Avenge My Death.

Amongst the scathing political anthems and biting social commentary expect instrument swapping galore, general onstage chaos and the sort self-deprecating mirth these kind of theatre venues were originally built for, as the Little Theatre gets its freak on with one of the best and most original live acts around.

Support on the night comes from Independent State of Mind (Kev Howard and Tim Coyte – the region’s best guitar/didgeridoo combo) and Durham’s up-and-coming Sam Slatcher, whose delicate melodies reach out to humanity.
