Reliably informed

For the uninitiated, Night Vale is fictional desert town, somewhere in the south western United States. It’s a world where strange goings on are commonplace and conspiracy theories are real… and on Monday 21st September, audiences at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House are about to be transported there.

The wildly popular podcast Welcome to Night Vale has built up a mightily impressive cult following since launching back in 2002, and it’s not difficult to understand why it’s remained a mainstay of the podcast charts. Each instalment delivers dedicated stories about the town and its characters, taking the form of a community radio show hosted by walking enigma Cecil Palmer (played by Cecil Baldwin).

The mysterious municipality is making a foray from podcast to print, with the release of the very first Night Vale novel in October and the 10-city UK tour is designed to coincide with this; the fully-realised live show brings Baldwin’s character to life on the stage, alongside evocative musical accompaniment by Disparation and special guest Jason Webley as The Weather.

Flaunting a similar brand of American gothic to that of Stephen King, The Twilight Zone and Twin Peaks, we can promise that once you enter the strange world of Night Vale, you won’t want to leave.

Welcome to Night Vale is at Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle on Monday 21st September.
