Reliably informed

We’re not short of rock bands in the region, but rock bands who combine psychedelia, blues, funk, jazz and punk? You might be more hard pressed to track a band like that down. Unless, of course, you’ve encountered the sensual, titillating quartet Velvoir, who have carefully been nurturing their own signature sound for some time, waiting for just the right time to release it into the wild. With gritty honesty, brutal intensity and an atmospheric sound that will expand your cerebral cortex, the band are showcasing their distinctive and sensory sound at The Central this Friday.

Joining Velvoir on the night are all-female power-pop trio ICENI, whose live shows run almost entirely on good vibes, tea and a love of Laura Branigan. Always bold and compelling, their combo of guitars, blistering drums and quirky piano licks always put a smile on even the grouchiest of faces. Rounding off the night are Oxford-based Martini Russa, a collaboration between Brazilian-Spanish guitarist Martini and Russian-American songwriter and vocalist Anastasia Gorbunova. If that’s not enough to entice you in, maybe the fact that they play both originals and a mix of old blues standards will lure you into their enticing grip.

Velvoir, ICENI and Martini Russo play at The Central, Gateshead on Friday 22nd May.
