Reliably informed

The team behind the Northumberland Arms are certainly an eclectic bunch. A few weeks ago they brought the comedic but brilliant balls-rock of Bad Guys to the venue and now they’re taking something of a U-turn down a decidedly different road by bringing some highly euphoric and atmospheric rock and experimental music to us.

Since forming in 2011, Glaswegian instrumental post-rock quartet Vasa have expanded to become one of the most hotly tipped bands in Scotland. Their blend of sublime, melodic and highly energised live shows have caught the eyes and ears of tastemakers on both sides of the border, thanks mostly to their debut EP Never Have Dreams. Combining atmospheric, soaring soundscapes and explosive bursts of charged-up rock, it underlined their status as one of the most exciting young bands in Scotland.

Supporting them on the night is Nathalie Stern, fresh from her triumphant slot alongside tUnE-yArDs last month. With her invigorating mix of drone, keyboard motifs straight from the set of Blade Runner and folk-inspired vocal crescendos, her live set is always filled with invention and mind-warping technical wizardry. Winter Isle, made up of former members of Lovatchkin, Black Wolves and Knasaburns, round off the lineup with their expressive instrumental music combining elements of classic atmospheric indie with found sounds and experimental breaks.

Vasa, Nathalie Stern and Winter Isle play at the Northumberland Arms, Newcastle on Sunday 19th April.
