Reliably informed

Sometimes, when you’re growing up in the north, things can seem just a little bit bleak and uneventful, especially if you’re living in one of the smaller towns and villages. That was certainly how Seaham-born Mattie Vant saw his childhood. As a teenager, he started a band in the hope that he could avoid the shackles of education and the horrors of the minimum wage. Luck shined on Mattie, as his band supported a little known Swedish band in Sunderland, where he met drummer Martin Soderin. A move to London and a few jobs working in a charity call centre and bars to make ends meet later, Mattie got his new band VANT off the ground. And the rest is history.

VANT have been likened to a cross between The Kinks and Pixies, but Mattie himself takes inspiration from a variety of different musical genres. Most of his songs are two and a half minute blasts of condensed energy that are socially aware and shun the beige nature of modern pop. Currently the band are on tour supporting the release of their double A-Side single Parasite/ Do You Know Me, which work the grey matter as much as your body. VANT are a band on the rise, and their current tour is a chance to catch them before they go truly stratospheric.

VANT play at Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough, on Thursday 26th March.
