Billed as seventeen days of creative mayhem encompassing storytelling, comedy, music, dance and drama, this year’s Under The Dome Festival is set to be a two and a half week extravaganza of culture. And no, it doesn’t matter that there’s no dome, they’d probably raise the roof anyway.

Kicking off the festival is a screening of Tim Burton’s Big Fish on Friday 17th July at the Jam Jar Cinema. Starting the Tale Spinning series that runs throughout the festival, the screening is followed by a discussion on the iconic director’s flair for spinning a good yarn. On Sunday 18th July, the Whitley Bay Playhouse will play host to one of the most barnstorming acts in the country, The Demon Barbers XL. The folk group have recently been touring with some of the country’s best clog, sword, hip hop and break dancers to help present one of the most spectacular gigs you’re likely to see this year. If you’re up for some quirky storytelling magic then Button Box Theatre are presenting their show An Illuminating Yarn, based on the Saltburn Pier yarn bombings, to the festival on Friday 24th July before heading off to Edinburgh. Hannah Rickard and Tim Bloomer will be stripping their sound down to acoustic levels on Friday 31st July as the Relatives and Big Red artists team up for a special session.

Across the two and a half weeks, events including arts and crafts, sets from local acts such as They Caffreys and The Pastures, Americana sessions, creative workshops, Amanda Nicole’s School of Dancing and much more will be taking place, giving the chance for everyone to get a flavour of what Whitley Bay has to offer.

Long term, the festival aims to establish a cultural base within Whitley Bay and opportunities to local artists. And you never know, they might even be able to invest in a dome, even if it is just decorative…

Under the Dome Festival takes place between Friday 17th July and Sunday 2nd August. Find out more at their official website.
