Everyone, regardless of age, loves a good scare, it gets the adrenaline pumping and gives you a feeling of being alive, it brings friends and family closer together as you cling to one another for comfort and security and, through ghost stories, it also gives you an opportunity to learn about the past through characters whose notorious actions, gruesome ends and afterlife antics shaped local folklore.

Coming to The Star and Shadow Cinema on Sunday 27 October (from 3pm) is Uncanny Canny Tales, an event that brings all the fun, facts and thrills of the natural and supernatural world to those who dare to be scared. Storyteller, Chris Bostock accompanied by musician Ken Patterson, will be sharing stories to perplex or bedevil you in an afternoon of strange tales for all the family from the seen and the unseen world. Drawing on folktales from Northumberland and County Durham, from faery lore and true stories, from ghosts to unquiet graveyards, there is something there to send chills up the spines of even the most bravest of souls and give your Halloween the spooky kickstart it needs.

The event is for family audiences aged 8 and over. Tickets are £5 for children, £7 adults, £16 for the family (maximum of four people) and available from The Star and Shadow website.
