As if you need an excuse to visit the North East’s gorgeous coastline this spring, it has to be Tynemouth Food Festival. On Saturday 9th to Sunday 10th May, the food fest returns for the forth year running, ready to top its spectacular debut in 2012, when over the course of the weekend, more than18,000 people descended on the picturesque seaside town. This year, set in the stunning grounds of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, the festival brings together the regions best food and drink, with over 50 local produce stalls, chef demonstrations, and plenty of street food from the likes of Fat Hippo Burger Bar, Pizzette, Monsieur Crepe, Zapatista Burrito Bar and North Street Feast with some mouth-watering new creations.

Aside from devouring your own body weight in artisan breads, cheeses, organic meats, gourmet chocolates and washing it all down with the best of wines and local ale, you might also pick up some culinary tips from some of the North East’s experts in cooking and dining. Kicking off the festival at 10am on Saturday, Blackfriars Restaurant’s Head chef, Dan Duggan – who has cooked for Sir Bobby Robson, Craig Revel Horwood, The Futureheads and Al Murray, to name just a few – will be demonstrating some popular dishes from the Blackfriars menu. Throughout the weekend, also sharing their refined culinary skills will be Sachins owner and chef, Bob Arora, head chef at House of Tides, Danny Parker, Dave Coulson of Peace and Loaf and Wheatberry Gosforth’s Vicky Turnbull.

Prefer your cooking to be a bit more hands on? On Saturday, The Northumberland Sausage Company will be holding sausage making workshops with expert ‘Timothy sausage’. Need I say more? Plenty of inappropriate innuendos to be expected.

There will of course, be much more including live music, an entertainment marquee and a tipple tent. It’s a food festival at the seaside, what’s not to love? Just don’t forget your shopping bags or your appetite, I have a feeling they’ll both come in handy.

Tynemouth Food Festival takes place Saturday 9th May,9am to 6pm and Sunday 10th May, 10am to 4pm.
