Yes, starting out in Boston’s DIY punk scene is as cool as it sounds – as is then moving your musical base to country music Mecca Nashville. The proof is in up-and-coming band Twen, led by vocalist Jane Fitzsimmons and guitarist Ian Jones, whose surprising sound borrows not from their punk or country roots but instead from vibrant psych rock and dream pop.

Twen were just doing their thing at a basement gig when someone recorded their very first show, which was ultimately was released as an EP that brought them high acclaim. Their debut album Awestruck, released last September, was recorded over two years whilst on the road. Its fusion of sounds span pop and rock, with hazy yet heavy undertones. Jane’s silky vocals are something else; lulling you into a lush, dreamy state.

They bring their genre-defying show to Newcastle’s Head of Steam on Friday 7th February. Co-promoted by North East promoters Wandering Oak and The Kids Are Solid Gold, the gig has ‘do not miss’ stamped all over it.
