New art space Felix The Gallery – housed in a former brothel above Middlesbrough’s Club Bongo International – aims to bring world class contemporary art to the region, as well as shining a light on the region’s significant scene.
Bobby Benjamin’s latest arty incarnation comes via his arts organisation Dovetail Joints. The next showcase, running from Thursday 17th November until Friday 23rd December, features a solo exhibition by artist and designer TUHUTZS (aka Karl Baur), who presents a body of work made in response to a six month sabbatical spent in Argentina. Karl’s collection of paintings, and his ‘tropical takeover’ of the gallery, have clearly been influenced by his travels, with colourful and expressive paintings spilling over into creatively designed custom-made hats. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a custom score by soundscape artist Adam Trattles entitled Pum Para Arriba.
Bobby’s keen to emphasise the space’s diverse use, with future shows planned for painter Phillip Gatenby and noise collective FEED in the New Year. Designed to offer artists an experimental environment in which to challenge their audience and develop their practices, Bobby’s proud to take a different approach to art in the region. “Our gallery is the antithesis of much of the current Middlesbrough art scene. We finance the project with our giro cheques; we do not charge for entry, we place our emphasis solely on introducing high quality art, music and performance to the people of Teesside and beyond. Art must never be an afterthought. Money is irrelevant.”
