Influential Spanish filmmaker Bigas Luna is set to have his rich career celebrated across various North East venues, as from Wednesday 8th until Sunday 12th June, the work of the revered director receives screenings and is the centre of an art exhibition at Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema, Vane Gallery and ¡Vamos! Festival in the five-day long tribute, which also features Spanish food and music.

Sadly passing away in 2013, the internationally renowned movie maker had many hit films including popular comedy/drama Jamón Jamón, he managed to launch the careers of talents such as Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. There’s a free exhibition of Spanish video art by Bigas Luna at Vane Gallery in Commercial Union House, Newcastle from Wednesday 8th to Sunday 12th June. It all features some of Luna’s most controversial video artwork, including famous short Necklace Of Flies.

Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle hosts screenings of four of Bigas Luna’s biggest films, with the hugely popular trilogy Iberian Portraits with includes the aforementioned Jamón Jamón, with the screening running from Friday 10th until Sunday 12th June. The films on the Friday and Saturday are followed by Q&A sessions with the director’s daughter, art curator Betty Bigas and Consol Tura, an actress and casting director in Bigas Luna’s films.

To mark the films’ links with Spanish culture, there’s the Iberian Portraits After Party, including Spanish food and drinks inspired by the movies and a Spanish-themed DJ set, which will be held at Tyneside Bar Café on Friday 10th June from 10.30pm until late. A special Spanish menu will also be served all weekend. A Mardi Gras Clubnight will be held at ¡Vamos! Social on Saturday 11th June from 11pm until late; featuring DJ SelectorChico, PantherPanther live and SidiRum live. A special food menu will also be available throughout the ¡Vamos! Festival from Wednesday 8th until Sunday 12th June. The Spanish Director left a lasting impression with his gift as a filmmaker, and there’s a chance to immerse yourself in why he was so brilliant in five very special days.

The Bigas Luna tribute takes place at Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema, Vane Gallery and ¡Vamos! Festival from Wednesday 8th until Sunday 12th June.
