Set to be an intricate piece of theatre, Ticker is written and performed by Geordie native Tom Machell, and comes to Newcastle’s Alphabetti Theatre from Tuesday 19th-Saturday 23rd November. Renowned for his comedic writing for stage and his screen debut The Bucket, Tom isn’t shy of producing sophisticated dark comedy.

Ticker narrates the life of the protagonist, Toon-born millennial Spencer, whose entire being becomes shattered after the love of his life passes away suddenly and suspiciously. Spencer rapidly becomes both a suspect of his lover’s death as well as a mourner, consumed by his loss and plunged into the depths and darkness of grief.

A clever collaboration of genres, from thriller to comedy, Ticker is based on Tom’s own experiences and seeks to deconstruct ideas of masculine identity, exploring themes of toxic masculinity and illuminating the damaging consequences of male stereotypes, most prominently the archaic philosophy that men neither cry nor can speak openly about their feelings and emotions.

Dark themes of death, grief and loneliness are paired with satirical, playful black humour; expect sharp and witty dialogue delivered with emotion and vulnerability and executed in what is sure to be a stand out lead performance from Tom Machell.

Ticker is at Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle from Tuesday 19th-Saturday 23rd November
