Gateshead’s contemporary arts hub, The NewBridge Project, will be exhibiting the work of artist Chris Alton from Friday 6th March until Friday 10th April in a commission titled Throughout the Fragment of Infinity That We Have Come to Know.

Chris Alton came to prominence through several previous projects; back in 2012 Alton founded the  protest group English Disco Lovers to reclaim the acronym EDL from the English Defence League.

This new commission draws heavily from science fiction in order to explore topics like colonialism, economics, mythology and the concept of the solidarity economy. NewBridge defines the solidarity economy with a “commitment to equal decision-making, active opposition to all forms oppression, ecological sustainability, acting in solidarity, fostering a variety of approaches, and system change”.

“Aspects of the solidarity economy are present in my practice; this is largely due to my Quaker upbringing.” Chris Alton explains. The exhibition will be a mixture of imagined extra-terrestrial currencies, real money, and a video essay called What Mortals Henceforth Shall Our Power Adore? “The exhibition isn’t so much about expressing the solidarity economy as a concept, if anything, I might say it runs parallel to the idea of the economy, or riffs on it.”
