The newly refurbished Georgian Theatre in Stockton’s Green Dragon Yard hosts The Wytches this month. Described as dark, psychedelic and doomy, it will be the four-piece’s first visit to the venue since blowing everyone away at Stockton Calling 2013.
Since then the Brighton-based band have released two albums and an EP, with last year’s album All Your Happy Life described as “consistently glum” but a turning point for the band as they moved away from the retro psych they had been known for. With singer Kristian Bell’s distinctive growl now often replaced with a semi-spoken word monologue and second guitarist Mark Reed added as the full-time fourth member the band have come into their own. Having always been resolutely a live band as well, expect tracks from All Your Happy Life and 2014’s debut, Annabel Dream Reader, to be given a dark and dirty sonic overhaul.
Support on the night comes from Leeds’ hypnotic rockers Weirds whose debut EP Weird Sun, out now, offers guttural psych as produced by Matt Peel of Eagulls fame.
The new look venue boasts an increased 300 capacity main room (having knocked through to a disused hotel next door), improved bar and toilet facilities, and is sure to be a credit to Tees Music Alliance, Stockton and live music in the region as a whole.
